What are spider veins and why do I have them?

Spider veins are very superficial abnormal red veins that usually appear in a starburst distribution. They are usually seen on legs but can appear on any part of the body including the face. A number of factors contribute to the development of spider veins, including heredity, pregnancy and other events that cause hormonal shifts, weight gain, occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, and the use of certain medications.

 

How does the Aesthetic Clinique take care of spider veins?

The Aesthetic Clinique uses the Lux 1064 Yag laser for spider veins. It is reported to be the most comfortable and effective laser for spider veins.

 

Do I need more than one treatment?

More than one treatment is the norm and up to 4 treatments might be needed. Usually these are spaced apart by about 8 weeks.

 

How do I prepare for the treatment and what do I do afterwards?

On the day of treatment, it is recommended to wear shorts and bring along some lose fitting garments like sweat pants. After the treatment, it is not recommended to do a lot of standing, sitting, or jogging during this period, but walking is encouraged. The treated veins may look worse for the first month. It’s probably not a good idea to have laser therapy within 2-3 weeks of wanting to wear shorts, a mini skirt, or bathing suit. There is no need to wear special hose after treatment with the 1064 Laser. It is recommended to apply cold compresses on the veins for the first day as well as apply OTC steroid cream.

 

How are the treatments charged?

The cost of laser therapy is based upon time required for the treatments. Billing is in 15-minute increments. Most treatments are less than 15 minutes but some can last up to 30 minutes.

 

Who should not have this type of treatment?

Spider vein laser therapy is not indicated for people who have significant clotting disorders or large varicose veins, or for diabetics.
